In a verdict that shocked the commercial bus industry, jurors determined that Motor Coach Industries Inc., was liable for a gruesome bus crash that killed seven people back on Valentine's Day of 2003 because the bus did not have stability installed.
What made the ruling so surprising was the fact that the National Highway Safety Administration does not make seatbelts mandatory on commercial buses because it believes that seat belts would provide little or no protection to the passengers.
This ruling could lead to future liability claims by future victims of bus accidents and could potentially cost the commercial bus industry millions upon millions of dollars in litigation and liability costs.
